A fraud case has been registered against 14 doctors and others and the police might as sign the investigation to a special investigation team (SIT), which is led by an IPS officer.
Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the case was registered after a preliminary inquiry by the Station Commander, Amritsar Cantonment. He further said that he was yet to go through the case file but assured a thorough inquiry into the matter.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has condemned the FIR registration of the doctors and hospitals for allegedly committing fraud in the Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) that is meant for Army veterans. The IMA mentioned that the FIR has been registered unilaterally and statements of doctors are not yet recorded.
The IMA, Amritsar, in a statement said that they have looked into the matter and have observed that the complaint is completely unilateral and biased. State president, Dr Kuldeep Singh Arora, along with Dr Amrita Rana, honorary secretary and IMA chairman, Dr Sukhjit Singh, mentioned that the doctors were not given any chance to present their viewpoint.
The IMA requested the authorities to conduct an unbiased investigation into the matter, while condemning the FIR. The police had booked 24 persons, which includes 14 doctors and Army veterans, for misuse of funds released under the ECHS.
